“Close-up Photographer of the Year (CUPOTY) was started in 2018 by husband-and-wife team Tracy and Dan Calder,” the organizers of the competition said. Celebrating the sometimes disregarded genre of close-up, macro, and micro photography, CUPOTY is an annual competition. Its goal is to inspire viewers and photographers to slow down and perceive the world fresh.

Daniel Sly, the photographer behind the “Potbellied Seahorse” picture, generously told us the background of his amazing shot: “During an early morning dive in Sydney’s Botany Bay, I spotted this potbellied seahorse seeking safety at the middle of a cluster of sea tulips. The sea tulips swirled about the seahorse in peace, then surged.
