Not welcomed so well in its initial years was the Guggenheim, which we have discussed as one of the glories of architecture combined with the Eiffel Tower. Some really said it looked like a gigantic toilet bowl. Critics of Frank Lloyd Wright said back then that he was producing “architecture for architecture’s sake,” as the curving walls of the museum made hanging artworks difficult. Other vivid descriptions call for “inverted oatmeal dish” and “hot cross bun.”
