They started making cameras designed especially for creating panoramas in the late 1800s. The cameras were either 360-degree rotation cameras, where the camera and the film revolved together, or swing-lens cameras, where the lens rotated while the film stayed still. The Al-Vista, which debuted in 1898, was the first panoramic camera to be mass-produced. Swing lenses were employed in the majority of mass-produced panoramic cameras.
