During the Civil War, George Barnard took some of the first panoramas for the Union Army. Two or more wet-plate negatives that had been exposed in a traditional camera were used to print them. An emulsion was applied to the wet plates, which were then exposed and sensitized.After every exposure, the camera was turned to the next panorama segment to create a fresh negative. Once the negatives arrived at the studio, they were put on a sensitized piece of photographic paper and exposed to the sun. They were then adjusted, cleaned, cropped, and positioned for the final panoramic image.
